There are many days in history that seem to have significant events happen. This day marks some important events. In 1825, the United States Congress approved the relocation of Eastern Indian tribes to what is now Oklahoma and the beginning of the “Trail of Tears.” In 1880 Thomas Edison patented the Incandescent Light Bulb and in 1888 the National Geographic Society was founded.
O God who walks with us as we move through history, help us to find ways to be better to those who look, talk or act differently. May we celebrate the wide breadth of culture that exists in the world and find wonder in the diversity of humanity. May we have the inquisitiveness to explore the wonders of the world and the inventiveness to design and build new things that bring light to the world. May we learn from the mistakes we have made when we have displaced, enslaved and been unwelcoming to those different from us and use all the many gifts we have been given to your greater glory. Help us to stand up to injustice and become beacons of your light in the world. All this we ask in your most Holy Name. Amen.
