Prayer for January 28, 2021

In the calendar of Saints, we remember today Thomas Aquinas.  His impact on Christian thought, philosophy and science was great.  I am reminded of two quotes attributed to him.

“We set forth our petitions before God, not in order to make known to Him our needs and desires, but rather so that we ourselves may realize that in these things it is necessary to turn to God for help.”

“Sorrow can be alleviated by good sleep, a bath and a glass of wine.”

O Lord our God, we thank you for the many examples of saints you have given us.  May we learn from them the many lessons their lives have provided us.  May we recognize that there are so many times when we think that we can handle what is before us on our own.  Help us to know that there are times when we need your help and guidance and that sometimes that help comes from people you have set along our path.  May we be willing as well to be the person responding to those in in need and willing to let go of those things that are burdens we no longer need to carry.  Help us to find peace and comfort when we are filled with sorrow and know that finding rest is sometimes the best way to begin to move from sorrow to joy.  All this we ask in your name.  Amen
