The Return of the Prodigal Son is perhaps one of the most powerful parables in scripture. It speaks so deeply to our need to ask for and be forgiven. It also has this unique character in the older brother who struggles with forgiving others.
Forgiving God, we are all prodigal and yet we also have found ourselves as all the other characters in the parable of the prodigal son. We are selfish and suddenly find ourselves needing to ask forgiveness. We are faithful, and have a hard time when someone who makes constant painful mistakes seems to not be punished enough. We are the parent who wants so much for both his children to learn the lesson of loving unconditionally. Help us when we are each of these people to feel your presence and become who you would have us become. Amen.
